SUBJECT SELECTION FOR 2025

Subject selection is an important process in your school year. When choosing your subjects, you need to consider a number of factors. Think carefully about your learning. Talk to your whānau, your teachers and your peers and make sure the choice you make is what you want to learn. See the background requirements for certain careers on the CAREERS pages at the back of this book.

NZQA QUALIFICATIONS

Credits are earned as a result of being assessed against Achievement Standards or Unit Standards. All Unit Standards are assessed internally. Achievement Standards can be either internally or externally assessed. Externally assessed Achievement Standards are generally completed in the November exam period.


ENDORSEMENTS 

Course Endorsements: Subjects that complete Achievement Standards may be endorsed with Merit or Excellence. This is possible if the student achieves 14 credits or more at Merit or Excellence. 3 of these credits must come from an external assessment. 

Level Endorsements: All NCEA certificates may be endorsed with Merit or Excellence. To gain an endorsement at least 50 credits at Merit or Excellence must be gained at the same level.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

• Level 1 Numeracy or higher

 NCEA Level 3

 14 Credits in 3 University approved subjects

 UE Literacy: 10 credits Level 2 or above, 5 Reading Credits, 5 Writing Credits

The following Level 3 subjects are approved but are not taught at Catholic Cathedral College. Some of these may be available by studying through Te Kura. 

Accounting, Agriculture and Horticulture, Art History, Chinese, Construction & Mechanical Technologies, Cook Islands Māori. Dance, Earth & Space Science, Education for Sustainability, German, Home Economics, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Print Making, Samoan, Sculpture, Spanish, Te reo Māori, Tongan.


NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARSHIP YEAR 13 

New Zealand Scholarship provides recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling. Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding, and ideas to complex situations. To be eligible to receive a scholarship award, the student must be enrolled in tertiary study in New Zealand for the years in which they receive monetary awards. For awards with second or subsequent year payments, recipients must maintain a ‘B’ grade average each year of their tertiary study in New Zealand.
