Priority in Enrolment Procedure
Catholic Cathedral College does not currently have an enrolment scheme in place.
As the only co-educational Catholic high school (years 7-13) in Christchurch, Catholic Cathedral College is able to accept students from across the whole of Christchurch city and the surrounding areas. Even with an enrolment scheme in place this will continue as the College will not have a geographic limit on its zone.
The below procedure explains how enrolment applications are prioritised so there is a clear and transparent process.
Preference versus Non- Preference Students
All preference students will be given priority over all and any non-preference students seeking new enrolment at Catholic Cathedral College.
Preference criteria is set by the Catholic Bishop and this will be followed by the College. Issues with obtaining preference certificates must be resolved with the relevant priests and are not matters which the College has influence over.
Enrolment information for parents seeking enrolment at Catholic Cathedral College
The agent for determining preference is the Bishop of Christchurch and his delegates – usually Parish Priests but in some cases a designated team from the Parish.
1. State integrated schools select preference students on the following grounds.
- 5.1 The child has been baptised or is being prepared for baptism in the Catholic Church.
- 5.2 The child’s parents/guardians have already allowed one or more of its siblings to be baptised in the Catholic faith.
- 5.3 At least one parent/guardian is a Catholic, and although their child has not yet been baptised, the child’s participation in the life of the school could lead to the parents having the child baptised.
- 5.4 With the agreement of the child’s parent/guardian, a grandparent or other significant adult in the child’s life, such as an aunt, uncle or godparent, undertakes to support the child’s formation in the faith and practices of the Catholic Church.
- 5.5 One or both of a child’s non-Catholic parents/guardians is preparing to become a Catholic.
Priorities for Preference Students
Applications for Enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:
- Priority 1: Preference students already enrolled in the following contributing Schools: Students at Year 6 at St James, Aranui and St Albans’ Catholic for entry into year 7. Students at Year 8 at any Catholic full primary school in Christchurch for entry into year 9
- Priority 2: Preference siblings of present students.
- Priority 3: Preference siblings of past students.
- Priority 4: Preference students who are the children of employees of the College who are not covered by Priorities 1-3.
- Priority 5: Preference students transferring from Catholic Schools in other parts of New Zealand.
- Priority 6: Preference students from state, private or non-Catholic integrated primary or intermediate schools.
- Priority 7: All other preference students.
- Priority 8: Non-Preference Students
2. State integrated schools have places for non-preference students. The number of places available for non-preference students allowable is governed by the maximum allowable under the College's Integration Agreement. Places available for non-preference students is calculated as follows: 5% of the Maximum roll of 653 students. Catholic Cathedral College has a maximum of 33 places. Non-Preference Students
Non-preference students will be enrolled only if enrolment places remain after all preference applicants have been enrolled.
Priority among non-preference will be given in the following order:
The siblings of students already in the school.
Siblings of former students.
The children of staff or Board members who seek to enrol their children.
Non-preference students coming from another Catholic integrated school
Children who live within three kilometres of the College and who want to participate in the special character programme of the school.
Please note: If there are more applicants than places available within the same priority category they will be allocated by ballot.
Non-Preference places criteria:
The applicants accept that they will be attending a school of special character and that their place in the school is conditional on their full participation in the Religious Education programme, and all special liturgies and events which are part of the Special Character of the College, including Retreats.
The applicants accept that they will be required to pay attendance dues as set by the. Proprietor and these are not voluntary.
Waiting List Procedure
All unsuccessful applicants may choose to have their names placed on a waiting list. The waiting list will be kept within relevant priority categories, ranked in order. Students on the waiting list may be offered places at a later date if they become available. The waiting list will remain current until the beginning of the next enrolment intake.
Pre-enrolment Procedure
Each year applications will be sought by a date determined by the Board and advertised in daily or community papers, school newsletters or via social media platforms. All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application as soon as possible after the closing date.
Notes
Applicants seeking priority status on the basis of enrolment at a particular school may be required to provide proof of enrolment at that school.
Applicants seeking priority status on the basis of a sibling relationship may be required to produce proof of that relationship.
The Board delegates to the Principal, as the professional leader of the school, the responsibility to administer this enrolment procedure and to exercise discretion where necessary.
Places at other levels
The selection processes described above will be the basis for students applying to enrol at Years 10-13 either at the beginning of or during the school year. Applicants on the waiting list will have first offer of places as they become available.
